NUPRC DEEPENS PARTNERSHIP WITH USAID POWER AFRICA

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) is strengthening its partnership with USAID Power Africa to advance energy transition and environmental decarbonization efforts.

The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, welcomed a delegation from USAID Power Africa to the NUPRC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. During the high-level meeting, Engr. Komolafe emphasized the Commission’s commitment to global energy transition goals. According to him, one of the mandates of NUPRC is to ensure oil and gas production is conducted in a manner that achieves a cleaner environment by working towards net-zero carbon emissions and environmental decarbonization.

He acknowledged support from USAID Power Africa and other entities, such as the U.S. Department of Energy, in advancing the Nigeria Gas Flare Commercialization Program (NGFCP) and called for further assistance in addressing funding constraints and access to appropriate technologies, which are crucial for the program’s success and Nigeria’s carbon credit earnings.

Representative of USAID Power Africa, Richard Nelson, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the NGFCP, which has awarded licenses to 49 recipients. He reiterated Power Africa’s commitment to supporting private sector success in clean energy and gas-to-power projects.

According to Mr Nelson, they are looking for ways to support the gas flaring project into a second round, so additional licenses can be issued and flared gas can be put to commercial use.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to establish a contact team from both organizations and draft a Memorandum of Understanding to solidify their collaboration.
