The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) says its policy guidelines for reducing methane emissions is the best in Africa and also amongst the best in the world.
The Commission’s Chief Executive, Engr Gbenga Komolafe, represented by the Commission’s Secretary, Barrister Olayemi Anyanechi made the declaration when a team of Norwegian investors in the oil and Gas Sector visited the Commission in Abuja.
The investors, led by the Norway’s Minister Chancellor and head of mission to Nigeria, Kristen Waringsaaen were at the NUPRC’S Headquarters to seek for areas of possible partnership in the aspect of Methane production towards reducing its emission in line with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for decarbonization.
The NUPRC, Komolafe said has put down regulatory guidelines that would improve accuracy and transparency in that direction as a its commitment to the decarbonization project.
According to him, the country’s new Methane Guidelines mandate that companies take swift and effective action by implementing the leak detection and repair measures on oil and gas infrastructure.
On their part, the Norwegian delegation, expressed satisfaction with Nigeria’s commitment in reducing Methane emission as a significant producer of natural gas in Africa, there by promising to leverage on every opportunity there is.
